Live bait fishing and chumming is the most productive method of fishing in Key West. Whether we are Kite fishing for pelagic species, fishing the reef for snappers and groupers or fishing the wrecks in search of Amberjacks, Sharks and Tuna. Live bait is vital to the success of a charter in Key West.
Goggle Eye
Great bait for kite fishing or slow trolling. Practically all saltwater offshore fishing species will respond favorably to this method of presentation.
Ballyhoo
Frequently used as cut bait and for trolling. In my opinion Ballyhoo is the number 1 bait when looking for Key West Sailfish and Mahi.
Blue Runner
Not quite as desirable as the Goggle Eye or Ballyhoo for the pelagic species it is far more durable and attractive to the reef and wreck species… Groupers can’t resist them!
Threadfin Herring
Used for wreck fishing, reef fishing, and gulf fishing. Not overly durable, but very useful and effective!
Pilchards
A large number of pilchards can be collected with a cast net and then used to create commotion behind the boat. When thrown to the water a chum ball or circle will develop and the feeding frenzy begins. Pilchards also make excellent bait for bottom fishing charters.
Pinfish
The most readily available bait in the Keys. Very durable and liked by most species.
